RANCHI: Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu today said that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a symbol of Hindu and Muslim cultures and asked the people to draw inspiration from his life so that the message of communal harmony and brotherhood is further strengthened.
Addressing a function organised by the Anjuman Islamia to mark the 130th birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Ms Murmu said the people should always remember the freedom fighters and the martyrs so that the next generation can draw inspiration from their lives and are made aware of the sacrifices made by them.
She said that Abul Kalam Azad was a great freedom fighter and nationalist who had a great belief in the Indian culture. Ms Murmu pointed that as a true son of the nation he opposed the division of Bengal on the basis of Hindi and Muslim dominated area and to spread nationalism among the Muslims he published a weekly Urdu journal “Alhilal’ and such was its popularity that in a week 26,000 copies were being sold.
After becoming the first education minister of Independent India he played a vital role in developing the national system of education and establishing the higher education institutions in the country and setting up of IIT and UGC were a result of his efforts.
Apart from contributing in the areas of education and culture Maulana Abul Kalam Azad also worked for the prosperity of Urdu language and literature. (AGENCIES)
