Govt admits huge losses due to IWT

Srinagar, June 29: State Government today admitted that Indus Water Treaty (IWT) between India and Pakistan is resulting in huge losses to Jammu and Kashmir and the matter would be taken up with Centre for compensation.
Minister of State (MoS), Farooq Andrabi, said the State is facing huge losses due to the IWT and an audit is being done to find out how much exactly the losses have occurred. He was replying to a supplementary of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator, Zafar Iqbal Manhas in the Legislative Council.
Earlier in a written reply to the question of Manhas, Minister incharge PHE, I&FC said the department has not done any study to access and quantify the losses caused to the State due to Indus Water Treaty.
When the legislator asked why the State Government is not pursuing the matter with the Centre, the MoS Andrabi said that “it is an international issue between two countries”. However Manhas wasn’t satisfied with the reply after which Minister for Roads and Buildings and Parliamentary Affairs, Abdul Rehman Veeri, intervened.
The Minister said that the State has sought compensation for the losses due to IWT and that the matter has been taken up with the Government of India.
