NEW DELHI: Former president, Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that discussion, debate and dissent were essential facets of democracy.

Inaugurating the diamond jubilee celebrations of Delhi University’s Dr Zakir Hussain College (Evening), here on Saturday, Mr Mukherjee, however, pointed out that disruption was also becoming prevalent and should be barred from entering the system.

Emphasising the cultural diversity of the country, Mr Mukherjee said that India’s diverse culture and languages were its identity. “In our time, every single product– from fountain pens to ink pots–were imported, but today India is making its own satellites which is a huge step towards a greater future,” he said.
