BENGALURU, Jan 5: On the concluding day today of the three day National Diabetes meet held at Hotel Meridien here, nationally known Diabetologist & National Professor of Diabetes, Dr Jitendra Singh, while addressing a special session on Insulin treatment in Diabetes, sought to drive home the message that  Diabetes management cannot be generalised and in order to be effective , the management of Diabetes has to be individualised depending on a number of individual factors .
Dr Jitendra Singh said, the daily routine, eating habits, nature of profession, age, duration of Diabetes and any other underlying disease are some of the crucial factors determining the modality of treatment in a Diabetic individual. What is the best treatment option for one Diabetic may not be the best for the other and this also applies to the use of Insulin, he added.
Brushing aside a perception in certain quarters that Insulin is the best option of treatment in Diabetes, Dr Jitendra Singh emphasized, even though in some cases particularly those with kidney damage or those in ICU/CCU setting, Insulin could be very desirable but in many other Diabetics, a better control of Blood Sugar levels is possible with the use of oral tablets.
Nevertheless, Dr Jitendra Singh hastened to add, wherever there is an indication for use of Insulin ,it should not be delayed. With modern gadgets like Insulin Pens becoming available, the patient needs to be educated that administration of Insulin is no longer an inconvenient or cumbersome process, he said.
Dr Jitendra Singh also enlivened the audience with anecdotes and instances from his quarter century of experience in treating patients with Diabetes. He said, Diabetes being a long term disease, enabled him to develop lifelong association with families across the cross sections and thus incredibly widened his social circle.
Dr Jitendra Singh answered a series of questions from the audience. Dr Samar Banerjee, a senior nationally known Professor of Medicine, chaired the session.
