JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP is expected to get a new state president and a major revamp by the first week of December.

“The term of the sitting president and Member Parliament comes to an end on November 3,” party sources  said here today.

Lobbying among the cadre has commenced.          “Keeping in mind the present alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party and the political situation in the state,  the high command of the Bharatiya Janata Party may go in for a candidate having vast experience in the political arena besides people-to-people contact.”

They further added that a sitting MLA or a senior minister is expected be the choice for the next party chief.          “The process of appointing new district heads is in progress and the names will be announced soon,” they said, adding that a revamp of the state BJP is also on the cards.              “Apart from appointing and nominating the new leadership in the BJP , its women wing (Mahila Morcha) will also be overhauled to give a boost to the party working at all district and tehsil levels,” the sources added.

The sources said that MLA West Sat Sharma is the front runner for the post of the new chief followed by senior leaders Satish Sharma, Chander Mohan Sharma, Chander Mohan Gupta, Narinder Singh, Sunil Sethi and Vibodh Gupta.

“The party high command may also opt for an outsider for the post if no consensus develops for a local leader to handle the state affairs,” the sources added.

So far,  BJP has had eight state presidents out of which, many like Chaman Lal Gupta remained Union MoS Defence.

Others included Dr Nirmal Singh, who is at present a Deputy Chief Minister of J&K, Jugal Kishore Sharma and Shamsher Singh Manhas Members of Parliament and Ashok Khajuria of the State Legislative Council.

“Sitting state president Jugal Kishore Sharma had almost rejected the party’s proposal to continue for a second term,”  the sources added.
