SRINAGAR, June 12:  Clashes erupted between students of Degree College Shopian and police today against the killing of a first year student last week in security forces firing.
Dozens of students of Shopian Degree College in South Kashmir today boycotted their routine classwork and staged protests against the killing of Aadil Farooq Magray last week at Ganavpora village of Shopian. The students raised slogans against the State and pelted stones on police deployed near the College.
The police responded by firing teargas shells towards the protesters after which pitched battles between the two sides continued for several hours. Police said that they exercised maximum restraint while dealing with stone-throwing students despite heavy stone-pelting.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari today justified the protests by Shopian students, saying they have lost their colleague. He said that no case would be registered against the students for campus protests.  In the meanwhile, the classwork in all educational institutes of the Valley today resumed and passed off peacefully.
