Protests, clashes in Old City

Srinagar, Apr 29: Clashes between youths and security force in Old City here were held after Friday congregational prayers today while funerals-in-absentia were held at several areas.
Dozens of masked youth assembled outside historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta and started sloganeering.
The masked protesters attempted to take out a rally from Jama Masjid compound towards Nowhatta square but security forces who were additionally deployed there foiled their attempt.
The forces fired dozens of teargas shells and pepper grenades towards the youth protesters which was retaliated by latter with stones and bricks, resulting in outbreak of clashes between the two sides. The clashes continued for several hours which resulted in halt of trade and transport activities.
Police said the clashes later spread to adjoining Saraf Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Gojwara areas and continued till late hours. However, the police said, no one was injured in these clashes.
Meanwhile, absentia funerals for veteran separatist and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) co-founder, Amanullah Khan, were held at multiple places including at Kashmir University, Jamia Masjid Hyderpora and Amira Kadal Bund. The funerals concluded peacefully and there was no violence.
