JAMMU, Nov 4: An oral health education and promotion program was held at Channi Himmat, today, which was supervised by Dr Sonal Bhatia, MDS Student (Public Health Dentistry), under the guidance of Dr Nidhi Gupta, Professor and Head (Public Health Dentistry).
They told the children that early childhood carried a serious disease affecting young children and toddlers. Promotion of oral health in children is really an effective way around to make aware about the importance of good dental health, they said.
The doctors added that the health promoting behaviors are established in infancy and early post natal period. Such programs are most effective if taken in a community health setting rather than in a dental office, they asserted
In the camp, school students and children from nearby locality were examined for dental diseases. A health education lecture was also delivered to children to make them aware about the importance of keeping teeth healthy.
Dr Sonal Bhatia disclosed that the incidence of dental diseases was on the rise because of bad eating habits. She further added that recommendations have been made about the design of program to prevent early childhood caries. Promotional and prophylactic actions carried out systematically contribute to the maintenance of oral health in the children, she added.
On this basis, a series of prevention and promotion programmes in oral health have been implemented. These programmes should be periodically evaluated to measure their impact on the target population in order to optimize and refocus the actions and resources, Dr Bhatia said.
The promotional-preventive programme starts with the visit of an educator from the module to the school to encourage participation and attendance in the programme and meet with parents, guardians and children, she added.
