JAMMU, July 23:  In order to address the problems of oral health ailments, an oral health awareness and dental check-up camp was organized by the Health Centre, University of Jammu, here today.
In the Camp, Dr Gautam Sharma, Dental Surgeon, JU and president, Indian Dental Association (IDA), Dr Bhupinder Singh, secretary IDA and Dr Aamir Shams Malik, Periodontist, were the experts and they conducted an oral health screening of the students and residents of the university campus.
On this occasion, Prof R D Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, JU, was the chief guest. He said that besides utilizing other services, the stakeholders should take advantage of the infrastructure for dental care existing in the University Health Centre.
While examining the Dental patients, Dr Gautam Sharma observed a tremendous rise in the cases of Nursing Bottle Caries among children, which spoil the upper front four milk teeth. He said the most common cause of these caries in early childhood is incessant and prolonged exposure of the baby’s teeth to nursing bottles containing juices etc. He advised the accompanying mothers to wipe the gums and teeth of babies with soft and clean cloth after every feed and regularly visit the dentist.  He also said that dental infections can be fatal and a known cause of various systemic diseases including cardiac problems.
Dr Aamir Shams gave tips for keeping the teeth and gums in good shape. He said that most of the dental diseases can be prevented by simple practice of brushing twice daily with a soft bristle brush. The basic aim of brushing should be to remove a thin bio film known as plaque.
Prof Yash Pal Sharma, Head, Department of Botany, and Convener of Health Centre Advisory Committee, said that health camps and awareness lectures has been a regular and perpetual feature of the health centre and similar such endeavours on various health issues shall be continued in future as well.
