Srinagar, Feb 5: Many civilians including photojournalists were injured as violent clashes between protesters and security forces erupt in Old City here and in north Kashmir’s Hajin area of Bandipora district.
Dozens of protesters clashed with security forces after Friday prayers at Nowhatta area of Old City here. The protesters resorted to stone-pelting on forces, triggering clashes after which police used teargas and pepper grenades against them.
The clashes at Nowhatta left several photo journalists, who were covering the event injured as they were hit by stones. Several protesters also sustained minor injuries. The clashes, which later spread to Gojwara and Rajouri Kadal neighbourhoods, and continued till evening.
Massive stone-throwing clashes erupt between local residents and security forces today against the killing of three foreign militants during gunfight in the area. The protesters were demanding bodies of the slain militants so that they could perform their last rites but police refused the same, resulting in violence.
During day-long clashes, police used dozens of teargas shells against the stone-throwing protesters while a complete shutdown was observed in Hajin and its adjoining villages. There was no report of injury to anyone during clashes.
