SRINAGAR, Feb 7: The sudden closure of Mehjoor Nagar Bridge by authorities has triggered chaos in civil lines and protest by locals in Srinagar as it was declared unsafe.
The closure of Mehjoor Nagar Bridge has resulted in traffic chaos in areas like Jawahar Nagar, Lasjan, Rambagh and Gogji Bagh. The authorities said the bridge was closed as it is unsafe for vehicular movement. The locals blame plying of tippers on the bridge for collapse of one of its pillars and slam authorities for being in deep slumber.
“The Bridge should be restored for the traffic as soon as possible. It is a vital bridge connecting lakhs of souls to City Centre Lal Chowk and in its absence we will have to take alternative route from Rambagh, which prolongs our journey and waste hours,” said residents of Lasjan, Padshahi Bagh, Soiteng and adjoining localities who staged a protest at press enclave here today.
The protesters said the authorities failed to preserve bridge and also wasted several crore rupees on the construction of alternate bridge, which however is yet incomplete. “We urge Government to restore Mehjoor Nagar Bridge as soon as possible as it is the shortest way for us to reach Lal Chowk and Lal Ded Hospital,” they demanded.
