Clashes in Srinagar, Sopore

Srinagar, Feb 24: Stone-throwing clashes broke out in parts of summer capital Srinagar and in Sopore town of North Kashmir today after Friday prayers during which police used teargas against stone-throwers.
Witnesses said soon after the culmination of Friday congregational prayers, dozens of masked youth came out of Jama Masjid in Nowhatta here and started sloganeering.
Amid sloganeering, the masked youth pelted stones on security forces deployed in the area and clashed with them for nearly an hour. Later, the clashes spilled over to nearby neighbourhoods and police used dozens of teargas shells against the stone-throwers at Saraf Kadal and Rajouri Kadal localities. The clashes continued for several hours.
In northern Sopore town of Baramulla district, similar clashes raged soon after Friday prayers culminated at Jama Masjid. Masked youth resorted to heavy stone-pelting on security men in Jama Masjid area and the forces retaliated by lobbing teargas canisters. Police said no one was injured during post-Friday clashes.
