169 civilians, 144 security men killed in border firing

SRINAGAR, June 28: Government today said 313 persons including 169 civilians and 144 security men were killed in cross border shelling in the State since year 2002.
This information was disclosed by Minister incharge Home in a written reply to a question of Congress lawmaker, Naresh Kumar Gupta, in the Legislative Council.
The Minister said 11,270 ceasefire violations have taken place so far along the LoC.  The highest number of border firing has taken place in 2002 when 8376 incidents were reported from the State.
According to Home Department figures, no violation of the 2003 ceasefire pact between India and Pakistan has occurred in 2004, 2006 and 2007. The highest number of civilians killed in ceasefire violations were 2002. That year 76 civilians were killed. In 2003, 59 civilians were killed in border shelling.  For next 10 years, four people died in the ceasefire violation.  In 2014 and 2015, 14 and 16 civilians were killed in ceasefire violations from across the border respectively. Since 2003, 735 civilians were injured in these violations.
The security forces’ personnel on the border have also bore the brunt of the ceasefire violations. During these violations, 144 security personnel were killed and 311 were injured. In 2002, 58 security men were killed and 157 were injured, the highest so far since that year. In 2003, 40 security men were killed, the second highest but no death occurred in year 2004 to 2007.
The Home Department, meanwhile, said the security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have recovered more than 8000 AK series rifles and over 9.9 lakh AK rounds from militants since year 2002 to 2015.
According to the figures of the Home Department, the security agencies have recovered 8146 AK-47/56/74 rifles from militants from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2015 during counter-insurgency operations. During the same period, 9.938 lakh AK-series rounds and 24372 AK-series magazines have also been recovered.
The security agencies recovered 2877 pistols and revolvers, 2899 magazines and 38688 rounds. Besides, 44 Uber Machine Guns (UMGs), 24 carbines, 673 RPGs, 6 General-Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), 144 LMGs and SLRs, 76 sniper rifles, 698 rocket boosters and 181 .303 rifles were recovered from 2002 to 2015, said the Home Department.
According to Home Department, 22 UMG magazines and 7567 ammunition rounds, 141 LMG and SLR magazines, 16 carbine magazines, 7099 sniper rifle ammunition, 2700 .303 rifle ammunition, 347 belted ammunitions and one telescope were recovered in 14 years from year 2002.
The official figures revealed that 20158 grenades and hand grenades, 2828 electronic detonators, 14903 detonators, 613 Anti-Personnel Mines, 88 Anti-Tank Mines and 733 were also recovered from militants by security agencies. During 13 years period, 8947.25 kilogram of explosives and 6871.6 kilograms of RDX have been recovered during counter-terror operations.
As per the figures, the security agencies have also recovered 3513 wireless sets, 434 binoculars and also 3464 meters of cordex explosive. According to the official information, the arms and ammunition recovered by the police are kept in Mal Khana of courts/ District Police Line Kotes and concerned police stations as case property.
From year 2002 to 2015, 17605 cases have been registered in which 6330 persons have been arrested and 6315 persons challaned, the Home Department informed.
