SC Collegium recommends elevation of 5 persons including J&K CJ to Apex Court

JAMMU, May 27: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the elevation of five persons, including Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, Justice Arun Palli, as Judges of the Apex Court.

The recommendation was made during the Collegium meetings held on May 22 and May 27.
The names recommended are Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh; Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court; and Senior Advocate V Mohana.
The appointment of Senior Advocate V Mohana will strengthen women’s representation in the Supreme Court. The Apex Court presently has only one woman judge, Justice B V Nagarathna. No woman has been appointed to the Supreme Court since August 2021.
Recently, the sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court was increased to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, raising the strength by four. The Court presently has 32 judges. Two more vacancies are expected soon following the retirement of Justice J K Maheshwari and Justice Pankaj Mithal in June.
Born on September 18, 1964, Justice Palli graduated in Commerce and completed his Bachelor of Laws from Panjab University, Chandigarh, in 1988. He commenced legal practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
He gained expertise in diverse areas of law, including civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, industrial, and labour law. He was appointed Additional Advocate General for Punjab on September 1, 2004, a position he held until March 2007. He was designated Senior Advocate on April 26, 2007.
Justice Palli also served as amicus curiae in various contentious matters before the High Court. He dealt with diverse subjects involving important legal propositions before Division and Full Benches. He also appeared before the Supreme Court, Delhi High Court, and the Himachal Pradesh High Court in several significant matters.
He was elevated as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 28, 2013. He also served as Executive Chairman of the Haryana State Legal Services Authority from May 31, 2023, and was nominated as a member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on October 31, 2023, for a tenure of two years.
Justice Palli was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on April 12, 2025, and took oath of office on April 16, 2025.
