CA XI drubs Income Tax XI by 49 runs in friendly T20

JAMMU, Dec 26: CA XI defeated Income Tax XI by 49 runs in a friendly T20 match at Jammu University Grounds, here today.
Earlier, winning the toss and batting first, CA XI scored a decent total of 173 runs in the stipulated 20 overs, losing 5 wickets in the process. Amit Gupta, Nitin Mahajan and Chetan Sharma were the main contributors with 50, 40 and 20 runs respectively. Sunny took 2 wickets for Income Tax XI.
In reply, Income Tax XI managed to score 124 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Naresh was the top scorer with 48 runs, while Sandeep contributed 20 runs to the total. Ajay Gupta was the wrecker-in-chief for CA XI, who scalped 4 important wickets. For this bowling display, Ajay was declared best bowler, while Amit Gupta, who earlier slammed half-century was declared best batsman.
Commissioner Income Tax J&K, AK Thathai was the chief guest on the occasion, while Commissioner Income Tax (Appeals), who was skipper of the Income Tax XI, was the guest of honour.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Joint Commissioners RK Kakkar and Rakesh Kumar and Assistant Commissioner BB Gupta.
The awards were distributed by AK Thathai (CIT), BB Singh CIT (Appeals), CA Dalip K Kaul, Chairman, J&K Branch of ICAI alongwith members of Executive Committee CA Vikram Garg (Vice Chairman), CA Anil Sharma, CA Shalay Razdan, CA Sandeep Pachnanda and CA Deepak Kapahi.

IT Joint Comm held in graft case

MUMBAI, Dec 26:
CBI today arrested a Joint Commissioner Income Tax posted at Thane for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3.5 lakh from a businessman to bail him out in a tax evasion case.
CBI sources said Sanjeev Ghai, Joint Commissioner posted at Thane office of Income Tax was taken into custody after he was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from the businessman.
The sources said Ghai had put the tax return of the businessman in the scrutiny raising doubts on the claims of losses incurred by him in the business.
Later, Ghai approached the businessman through a Chartered Sccountant to settle his case and allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh for the purpose.
During negotiations, the amount was brought down to Rs 3.5 lakh, they said.
After getting input about the deal, a team of CBI officers laid the trap at Ghai’s office and arrested him while he was allegedly accepting the bribe, the sources said.
Ghai would be produced before the special court for seeking custody, the sources said. (PTI)

Ranjath to decide on Yeddyurappa’s return: Karnataka BJP chief

BANGALORE, Dec 26:
Karnataka BJP President Prahlad Joshi today said the ball is in party national President Rajnath Singh’s court in the matter of deciding on return of former Chief Minister Yeddyurappa back into the party fold.
“Ball is in the court of Rajnath Singhji, our national President; state party has given its opinion – it has firmly urged the central party to avoid split in anti-Congress votes, we should unitedly go,” he told reporters here in response to a question about Yeddyurappa’s return to BJP.
He said, “Our opinion has been conveyed to the All India President. He (Rajnath Singh) has said after consulting all national leaders he will direct us in what way we should progress in this matter. We are waiting for his directions.”
Stating that national leadership has agreed to welcome Yeddyurappa, senior state BJP leader Suresh Kumar said, “Our President Rajnath Singh will give the green signal on the correct date.”
Asked whether Yeddyurappa’s return was imminent, he said, “I think it has been made clear number of times by our state President.”
Earlier, BJP state General Secretary C T Ravi said the party aims to win twenty plus seats (out of 28) in the 2014 Parliamentary elections in the state.
BJP’s Priministerial candidate Narendra Modi would be touring different parts of the state during January and February, he said, adding he was expected to visit Gulbarga, Hubli, Mysore, Belgaum, Dakshina Kannada/Udupi, Shimoga/Davangere.
“We have requested him to visit minimum eight places.” (PTI)

National Cancer Institute to come up at Jhajjar

NEW DELHI, Dec 26: The Centre today cleared a proposal for setting up of National Cancer Institute at the Jhajjar campus of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, at a cost of Rs 2035 crore.
The cancer institute will be located in Badhsa village in Jhajjar of Haryana, near Delhi and will be completed in a period of 45 months.
Approving the Health Ministry’s proposal, the Union Cabinet cleared a long-pending demand of Haryana government.
The step is being considered as a landmark in the area of cancer research in the country and shall lessen the deficit of tertiary cancer care in the Northern region.
Cancer is emerging as a major public health concern in India, where 11 lakh new cases are diagnosed every year and the mortality rate is 5.5 lakh per year.
Cancer treatment facilities in India are lagging behind when compared to WHO standards that requires a radiotherapy machine per million population. India at present has 0.41 machines per million population and the setting up of this institute will herald a new chapter in the initiative against cancer.
The Institute will have 710 beds for different facilities like surgical oncology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, anaesthesia and palliative care and nuclear medicine. It will also have the first of its kind Tissue Repository in India.
HSCC (India) Ltd, a public sector enterprise under the administrative control of the Health & Family Welfare Ministry has been appointed as Project Consultant for it by AIIMS Delhi.
The National Cancer Institute will operate on the lines of NCI in USA and DKFZ in Germany as a nodal center for indigenous research, promotive, preventive and curative aspects of care and human resource development.
The institute aims to plan, conduct and coordinate research on cancers which are more specific to India; like tobacco related cancers, cancer of the uterine cervix, gall bladder cancer and liver cancers.
The Health Ministry note said the focus will be on understanding, analyzing causes and genesis of various cancers. The Institute will further translate the knowledge gained to develop feasible strategies to improve cancer care services by improvement in detection, diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of patients.
The proposed institute will broadly have clinical division, research divisions, and disease management groups (DMGs). These DMGs will go in to the details of all issues pertaining to management of various cancers, site wise, besides other facilities.
The project consultant will be responsible for concept, detailed design & engineering, contracting, project management and medical equipment procurement, installations and the commissioning of the Institute. (PTI)

Army recruitment rally on Dec 30

UDHAMPUR, Dec 26: An Infantry Battalion (112) of  Territorial Army (TA), Dogra will organize a recruitment rally for the category general duty (GD) soldiers, clerks (SD)  and Tradesmen at Jalandhar Cantt on December 30.
A Defence spokesman said that the rally at Jallandhar Cantt venue would start at 9 am onwards for the candidates from J&K, Himachal, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi States. The age of the candidates should be between 18 to 42 years, weight 50 kg, height 160 cms and chest 77-82 cms. The Educational qualifications for soldier GD should be 10th pass with 45 % marks in aggregate and 33 % in each subject. For clerical cadre they should be minimum 10 Plus two pass with 50 % marks. For tradesmen, the minimum qualification is 10th pass.  Good shooters, vehicle mechanics, drivers and sportsmen will be given preference.

Body of female recovered from canal

JAMMU, Dec 26: The body of an unidentified female was recovered from the canal in Nagbani area, falling under the jurisdiction of Domana police station.
As per reports, body of around 46-year-old female was recovered from the canal in Nagbani area.
The body has been shifted to mortuary of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for identification.
A case has been registered at Domana police station and investigation started.

Shivam Baloria of BSF bags under 12 boys gold

JAMMU, Dec 26: Shivam Baloria of BSF bagged the gold in boys Under 12 years (20kg), while Pranjal Sharma of RCC received silver and Aditya Choudhary (BSF) and Kanshit Chanyal (SN) got bronze medals in first J&K Open Judo Cup Championship held at MA Stadium, Jammu which concluded yesterday.
The event held under the aegis of J&K Judo Association was organized by senior Judokas wherein the closing ceremony was attended by H K Lohia IPS Director SSG who was the chief guest and Special guest of honour Divya Tiwari Olympian (Judo Coach NIS Patiala).
In 35 Kg category Sareesh Mangotra of Shangrilla got gold, Kanav Sharma (RCC) bagged silver and Mohd Irfan of Kathua and Sahil Kumar (RCC) received bronze medals, while Kabra Altaf of Srinagar is the best Judoka.
In 25kg category Saket Sharma (RCC) received gold, while Om Billoria (BSF) got silver and Harish Mehra (RCC) and Sourav Sobel had to be contended with bronze medals.
In 40 kg category, Shivan Sharma (SOS) clinched gold, Divakar Singh (RCC) got silver, while Abhyer Singh (RCC) and Shabir Sharma (SN) won bronze medals respectively.
In 40 kg boys open, Rakesh Kumar (SOS) won gold, Aryan Gupta (RCC) got silver and Anirudh Sharma (BSF) and Varun (RCC) clinched bronze medals respectively.
In girls Under 12 (25 kg) category Palak Sharma (BSF) received gold, Kanishka (RCC) got silver, while Nirali (RCC) and Minakshi (BSF) won bronze medals.
In boys Under 14(40kg) category Pardep Singh (SOS) received gold, Sumit Kumar (DPS) received silver and Hirtik Sharma (Shangrilla) clinched bronze medals.
In 40 kg category Sakshi Sharma (SMS) received gold, Ashvina Bhat (BSF) silver while Bhawna Hans (BSF) and Suhasi Kiran (RCC) received bronze medals.
In boys (50kg) Faisal Iqbal (SGR) got gold, Shubam Manhas (SOS) received silver, while Udav Gupta and Vishal Gupta(JKPS) clinched bronze medals.
In girls Under 14 (open) category, Suhasi Kiran (RCC) got gold, Sanjana Manhas (SOS) silver and Vishali Choudhary got bronze medals.
In senior boys (55kg) Virbadhra Singh (RCC) clinched gold, Avinash Sharma (RCC) silver and Sahil Dogra (Kathua) clinched bronze medals.
In boys (66kg) Aman Gupta (RCC) received gold, Fazil (Srinagar) silver and Rajesh Sumbriya (RCC) clinched bronze medals.
In 81 kg category, Danish Sharma (RCC) got gold, Amjad Mir (Srinagar) clinched silver while Anirudh Sharma (RCC) got bronze medals respectively.
In senior deaf boys (55kg) Nayaz Ali (RCC) got gold, Raj Kumar (RCC) silver and Sunil Sharma (RCC) and Nabel (RCC) won bronze medals.
In senior girls (open) Kabra Altaf (Srinagar) received gold, Malvika Kapoor silver and bronze medal won by Poonam Sharma.
In open Wt deaf boys, Vivek Singh (RCC) gold, Abishek Gupta (RCC) received silver and Chetan and Shubam Kumar (RCC) got bronze medals respectively.
In open Wt Deaf girls, Rakshinda (RCC) got gold, Nidhi (RCC) silver, while Shivali Sharma (RCC)  and Nidhi Sharma (RCC) clinched bronze medals.
The event ceremony was also attended by Madan Lal Sharma, Deputy Director Youth Service and Sports and Vikas Gupta, general secretary, J&K Judo Association, Banu Pratap, organizing president and Rameshwar Singh, organization secretary.

CPI (M) for “Chakka Jam” against Govt failure to address Valley woes

Srinagar, Dec 26: CPI (M) today said they would start Valley wide “Chakka Jam” if the government fails to address the miserable power scenario, scarcity of essential commodities and safe drinking water.
The CPI activist, eld a massive protest demonstration in Kulgam against miserable power scenario, dismal functioning of Public Distribution System (PDS), scarcity of essential commodities and safe drinking water.
The protesting activists led by CPI (M) district secretary Abdul Hamid Wani marched from Bus Stand to Deputy Commissioner’s Office carrying placards, banners and shouting slogans.
“The overall power supply system in the State has become too faulty to cater to the genuine energy needs of consumers. Even metered areas are facing long and unscheduled power-cuts much to the annoyance of public,” the protestors said.
Stating that the people have a legitimate right to agitate against denial of their basic rights they said that the power development department has failed  in recovering hundreds of crores of power dues from government departments for which it was now shifting the onus to the poor consumers.
CPI (M) leaders remarked that the people in cities and towns are provided with low voltage and erratic power supplies, while as people living in rural and far flung areas are without electricity that too at a time when the power supplies are needed more to cope-up with the chilly winter.

Protest against ration shortage

MENDHAR, Dec 26: A large number of villagers from Uchhad and Nabna area today thronged the office of Tehsil Supply Officer (TSO)  in the town here and held protest demonstration against the CAPD authorities.
These villagers were raising slogans against the CAPD authorities for the scarcity of ration in the area. They alleged that a single Government depot at Uchhad which cater to the needs of three adjoining villages, remains closed  and for the last two months no supply of ration has been provided. No inspector or other supervisory staff ever bothers to visit the area and ensure supply to the public.
They also brought the matter to the notice of Tehsildar and SDM. Later, TSO moved to the local depot and got it opened by breaking lock and found stock in the depot. He took up the matter with AD Food Poonch who initiated inquiry into the matter. TSO issued warning to the ration dealer and assured the public to provide another ration outlet in the area.

Tributes paid to ex-Minister

JAMMU, Dec 26: Floral tributes were paid to former Minister and senior Congress leader, Yash Pal Khajuria on his 2nd death anniversary at the party office here today.
The function in this connection was presided over by former PCC president and sitting Minister Haj, Auqaf and Public Enterprises Peerzada Mohd Sayeed. Several other party leaders including ex-Minister R S Chib, Mula Ram, Yogesh Sawhney, Janak Raj Gupta ( ex-MP), S Gurmukh Singh, Th Hari Singh, K C Bhagat- MLA, Ravinder Sharma –MLC, G L Chalotra, Vinod Sharma, Sardari Lal Dubey, S R Sudhir, K L Gupta, Manmohan Singh, Santosh Magotra, Narinder Sharma, Rajiv Saraf, Ravi Singh Slathia, Neeraj Gupta and others paid their rich tributes to late Khajuria.
While paying tributes they described late Khajuria as a dedicated and sincere soldier of the party who devoted his entire life  in the service of the people of his area and Congress party. He was known in the party rank and file for his simplicity, honesty, integrity and commitment towards public service. He rose to the position in the party from Youth Congress cadre by the dint of his hard work.
