After resignation of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Muzaffar Hussain Beg, over seat sharing in the upcoming DDC polls, the PAGD has authorized its president, Mehbooba Mufti, to select seats of her choice in the polls.
The decision was taken today at a meeting of the amalgam chaired by Dr Farooq Abdullah at his residence. The meeting was called by Abdullah after repots of fissures in PAGD was carried by a section of media regarding the seat sharing agreement over the issuance of the first list of candidates.
The development comes after the resignation of PDP patron Muzafar Hussain Beigh yesterday. He had charged NC of taking lion’s share and accused PDP of maintaining silence over the issue.
Mehbooba Mufti had initially skipped the meeting without giving any reason. She was, however, telephoned to attend the meeting after everyone had arrived at Abdullah’s residence. She conveyed the Alliance constituents that she is with every decision whatever will be taken in the meeting.
Later, Dr Farooq Abdullah personally invited her for the meeting and was informed to select seats of her choosing for upcoming polls. A senior leader said that the members reaffirmed of furthering the cause of PAGD beyond the polls and stressed on the unity at the critical juncture.
General Secretary PDP Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura said that there are no issues between Alliance partners. “We had meeting sometime back. Earlier Mehbooba had meeting of alliance. Seat sharing on DDC is not important to us. We are fighting for a bigger cause. Our fight is to get status of pre-August 5, 2019 back”, he said.
Without naming Muzaffar Beg, he also said those who leave parties on seat sharing basis are “selfish people”.
Earlier yesterday, Mehbooba Mufti on seat sharing said: “We have a bigger cause to fight for than bicker over DDC elections.”
“PAGD was formed solely to safeguard the identity of people of J&K thats been under constant attack since Aug 2019. To assume it was created for petty electoral gains or to further party interests is erroneous. We have a bigger cause to fight for than bicker over DDC elections,” Mehbooba, the former Chief Minister said in a tweet.
JK Peoples Conference chief and former minister in PDP-BJP government Sajjad Gani Lone seconded it. “I agree with every word and would further add that the reality as it exists is that statesmanship and magnanimity is still a missing trait in our polity. And the absence is being felt more than any other time,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, today said political parties are united for the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the upcoming DDC Elections are very important from the point of view of the people.
Talking to reporters on the sideline of the PAGD meeting, he said the meeting deliberated the seat sharing for the upcoming DDC polls. He appealed people to come out from indoors on polling day and give a befitting reply to BJP and cast their vote in favor of pro-people candidate.
He added that PAGD will surely defeat those miscreants who want to bring black laws in Jammu and Kashmir and impose anti-people policies on ground.
