NH blocked at Ramban

JAMMU, Dec 5: Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway after landslides at Mehar near Ramban this afternoon.
Official sources said that landslides at Mehar blocked the highway at around 3 pm. The movement of vehicles on both sides came to grinding halt. Despite repeated attempts of the National Highway authorities, the road could not be cleared this evening as the shooting stones continued uninterrupted.
Sources said a large number of passenger vehicles have also been stranded on the highway. This is the area where road widening activity has been initiated by a local contractor having no experience of this kind, to whom the Gammon Company has sublet the job. The road is likely to be restored tomorrow, a senior Traffic Police official said.
