MNRE to tap wind energy potential of Ladakh

LEH, Dec 6: A meeting was convened under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary, MNRE, Bhanu Pratap Yadav regarding the installation of wind power project in Ladakh.
Deputy Commissioner, Leh Sachin Kumar, DG, NIWE Dr. K. Balaram, Director Solar Energy Corporation S.K Mishra, officers of Air force, BRO and various company representatives attended the meeting.
During the meeting Yadav gave information about the benefit of renewable energy. He said that Ladakh has a huge potential in terms of wind and solar energy as compared to other parts of the country. He further said that non-renewable energy is the main pollutant causing climate change related issues.
A threadbare discussion took place about exploring the possibilities of setting up of wind power projects in Ladakh region. The location for installation of wind power plant, setting up of wind masts for validation of wind resources and other implementation related issues were also discussed in detail.
Project Director, LREDA, Leh spoke about the good wind resource in Ladakh due to its valley shape terrain and temporal variation. He informed that Ladakh has a capacity to produce wind energy of nearly 1 Lakh MW within a 5% of its total area. It is also said that at 50 m, the estimated wind power potential is around 5311 MW and at 120 m, the estimated wind power potential is around 100000 MW.
