Srinagar, May 26: Scores of residents from Rajabgh area today protested against the installation of smart meters in the area.
Protesters, largely women, gathered near the zero bridge here and raised slogans against the Power Development Department for the installation of smart meters in the area.
The protesting people claimed that they would not allow the department to install smart meters in the area because they would be unable to pay the excessive bills generated by the devices.
“We already have meters installed in our homes and we are paying regular bills. What is the fun of installing new meters?” a protestor asked.
She said that their household budget is already stressed owing to the skyrocketing prices of essentials, and they would be unable to meet any additional expenses.
“We are poor families here, and majority of our men are daily wagers. If meters are installed, we will be unable to afford the bills,” a protestor said.
“No one is rich enough to afford the enormous electricity costs. Something should be done for the underprivileged so that they can get some relief,” a protestor remarked.
Protesters blocked the main road leading to traffic jam in the vicinity for about half an hour. However, after police intervened, the protestors dispersed peacefully.
