JAMMU, June 3: Jammu Doctors Forum (JDF) strongly condemned the repeated acts of violence against doctors in the last few days that include a brutal attack on Dr. Seju Kumar in Assam followed by an assault on Dr. Deepak in Karnataka.
The Forum said such attacks during COVID Pandemic are deplorable and despite the announcement of strict punishment for those involved in violence against doctors, repetition of such attacks is a matter of grave concern.
Any act of violence may it be domestic violence, an act of terrorism, communal violence or violence against doctors are equally condemnable but it is observed that acts of violence against doctors are not being condemned by the society as forcefully as it should be, and it’s quite painful to see certain sections of society justifying such acts of violence against doctors citing reasons like high cost of treatment in corporate and private hospitals that are a very unfortunate trend, Forum said.
Equally deplorable is the total silence of political parties on the issue of violence against doctors, the Forum added.
It has also been observed that no strong statement regarding violence against doctors has come from Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, yet who has following not only in India but across the world and his words will have a huge impact, and doctors expect him to take up this issue of violence against them in his “Mann Ki Baat” program. Equally baffling is the silence of Union Health Minister, Dr. Harshvardhan who is himself an eminent doctor. A number of doctors who are part of the Union Government and State Governments are also silent on this matter.
Violence against anyone is not acceptable in any civilized society but it seems that our country has accepted violence against doctors as new normal.
All this is happening at a time when more than 1500 doctors have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty due to COVID 19 infection during the last 15 months.
Forum appealed the entire country to condemn the acts of violence against doctors so as to force Central Government to pass a stringent law to strictly punish the culprits involved in violence against doctors in a fast track manner.
JDF further warned that if no such action is taken, bright students will stop joining the medical profession and qualified doctors will leave the country.
