LEH, May 17: A delegation from Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) led by Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson and president IMI, Prem Das Rai called on Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, R.K Mathur here today.
MP Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal was also present and the delegation briefed about the plan to organize the next edition of the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS) in Ladakh later this year.
President IMI apprised that the proposed SMDS in Ladakh is aimed at bringing people from across the mountain States to discuss sustainable practices and climate change mitigation actions.
President IMI briefed about the discussion with members of Sustainable Development Forum of Ladakh (SDFL) from Leh and Kargil. He shared that one of the outcomes of the meeting was including ‘sustainable tourism’ as a main theme.
A. Jamir of IMI informed that SDMS involves youth reflections, panel discussions and mountain legislators meet. He requested for support in organizing the summit.
LG Mathur stated that SDMS should be organized in Ladakh and requested the Chairman LAHDC Leh and members of IMI to ensure that there is the right mix of experts to make the summit meaningful.
He further requested IMI to focus on trans-Himalayan States also along with Himalayan States during the summit.
He stressed on the need to provide a platform to sensitise tourists, locals and security forces about conserving the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh.
Mathur shared plans of the administration to promote astro-tourism in the form of Dark Sky Sanctuary in Hanley and spread tourist activities evenly in all parts of Ladakh through home stays to promote the rich culture and heritage of the people of Ladakh.
