Srinagar, Sept 13: Burglars last night broke into the venerated shrine of Hazrat Sheikh Syed Abdul Qadir Jeelani in Khanyar area of Srinagar and looted cash from the charity box.
Police immediately released the CCTV footage and photographs of the suspect and requested help from locals in identification.
Police Station Khanyar received information from Intizamiya Committee of the Dastgeer Sahib shrine that during the intervening night some unknown thieves have attempted to break the donation box for stealing the cash from it. “After the commission of the crime, the suspected person escaped from the spot,” he said.
Police registered a case (FIR no. 66/ 2020 under applicable Sections of the law) and inquiry was going on. “We have constituted a special investigation team to investigate the case and collected CCTV footage and photographs of the suspect for investigation,” he said.

The locals of the Khanyar and neighboring areas of the city blamed the negligent attitude of the shrine management for the incident. “Since the security of the shrine was withdrawn, last year, it was the responsibility of the shrine management to keep the watch and ward of the shrine,” Mohammad Yousuf a local said, adding that a watchman could have averted the burglary, but he was unavailable.
He added the management demonstrated the similar failure when fire ravaged the shrine in 2012. “The management is guilty for everything. The Government should promptly place security at the shrine to restrict such episode,” he said.
A member of the shrine management said that nobody was awake when the robbery took place and they were unaware about the amount that was stolen from the donation box. “We have no idea how much was there in the charity box,” he said.
