Controlling speeding vehicles or riding a hydrogen-powered car can very well be a reality in the near future, thanks to students from various technology institutes, who have come up with innovative ideas in their bid to make the world a better place.
To control speeding vehicles students of Tamil Nadu’s Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT) have developed the Zonal Based Control of Vehicles using Micro-Controller.
“This technology will help to reduce over speeding in areas where there are schools, colleges, hospitals etc. This prototype uses frequency modulation to control a speeding car,” says R Suhadev Venkatesh and his team of four fellow students.
Venkatesh and his team participated at the Knimbus Young Innovator award held recently at the Indian Institute of Technology here.
The transmitter, proposes Venkatesh, could be installed in schools and continuously transmit signals to a vehicle outfitted with a receiver unit. When the desired frequency is received it activates the microcontroller which in turn reduces speed by controlling the spark in the spark plug.
After the vehicle leaves the slow down zone the micro controller brings back the vehicle to the initial or default position.
“We had over 900 entries from 600 colleges across India, including IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and BIT Mesra. These entries cover a wide range of subjects pertaining to subjects ranging from agriculture tech to Nano tech and many other kinds,” says Rahul Agarwalla, Founder and CEO, Knimbus.
The winning idea “Hydrogen Technology in IC Engines” which received a scholarship amount of Rs 25,000 offers a solution for reducing fuel consumption.
“We always wanted to do research around a model for energy conservation. That’s when we came up with the idea to reduce the consumption of fuel in engines,” says Kavin Raja of team Crescendo who made the engine, which can reduce fuel consumption.
Using hydrogen as the first fuel along with conventional fuel like petrol or diesel, the engine can also run safely in absence of any one of the fuel.
“It solves a major problem because we are consuming far too much fuel. Anything which gives you a solution to cutting down the usage of fuel is good. This winning idea happened to get highest score,” says Dhruv Nath, Professor and Chairman at Management Development Institute (MDI) and a jury member.
“The award endeavours to give innovators a platform to showcase their work to a relevant audience and we have partnered with Stern Fisher to ensure that they get the right mentorship to guide the execution of their ideas,” says Agarwalla.
Five finalists were selected for the award by a panel on the basis of public votes on knowledge platform Knimbus.Com. More than 20,000 people in the community voted on over 1000 scientific ideas and research papers submitted.
“The five ideas which were presented were all important in the current time. The judges while selecting the winning idea totally disagreed with each other but the idea was innovative,” says Nath.
Apart from Nath others on the jury comprise Rahul Chandra, MD, Helion Venture Partners, Anil Wali MD, FITT- IIT Delhi and Amit Garg, Business Head-Internet and Mobile, Firefly eVentures. (PTI)
