SRINAGAR, Feb 20: The residents of Malikpora village of Haril area in Handwara’s Mawer area have been left to fend for themselves in the absence of drinking water for the last several months.
As per residents, they even informed the concerned department in this regard, but, despite the passage of several months, their issue remains unresolved with the result they are subjected to immense trouble.
They said that during the recently held DDC elections, those who were in the fray assured that them that their issue will be resolved, however, they said, as soon as the election were over and they were elected, they never bothered to look back to them.
“We have brought the issue into the notice of the concerned department and even the elected DDC members during the election assured us the addressal of the issue, but all in vain,” said Abdul Rahim a resident of Malikpora village.
The womenfolk of the village are the worst affected as they had to get the water for drinking purposes from nearby canal from which even the animal drink, exposing them to health hazards.
“The problem is there for the last 6 months; even in the winter, we were forced to fetch drinking water from the canal, this is terrible as there is no one to listen to us,” a woman said.
Further, due to the consumption of drinking water from the canal, the residents said that they remain apprehensive of an outbreak of waterborne diseases.
As per the residents, the Jal Shakti Department has made a water bowl in the forest areas where it not safe for us as there remain dangers of the wild animals. Also, the department has installed water pipes in the area three years ago but those, as per the residents are running dry.
When contacted Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Handwara Nazir Ahmad Mir told Excelsior that he will look into the matter. “I will see to it and I am also asking the residents to forward a representation to the office in this regard,” he said.
