Justice Palli made these remarks in his address after presenting RK Chhibber Memorial Best Journalists of the Year Award given by Chhibber Memorial Trust in association with the Press Club of Jammu this evening.
“Journalism occupies a vital place in every democracy by informing the people, raising issues of public concern, questioning injustice, and promoting accountability in governance,” he said in his address to the distinguished gathering.
Observing that journalism remains one of the noblest responsibilities in public life as it is founded upon the pursuit of truth and service to society, Justice Arun Palli said the journalists often become the voice of those unheard and the mirror through which society sees itself.
This, he said, makes journalism one of the most valuable pillars of democratic life.
Referring to the present digital age, the Chief Justice noted that while technology has made communication faster and wider, it has also multiplied the challenge of maintaining credibility, accuracy, and public trust.
“In such times, the true value of journalism lies not in speed alone, but in verification, balance, and integrity,” he emphasized.
The Chief Justice of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh High Court remarked that integrity, discipline, honesty, and commitment to truth are timeless values which continue to guide institutions, inspire public confidence, and define the true purpose of journalism.
He advised the younger generation of journalists that while technology may change; tools, platforms, and methods, fairness shall always remain an enduring constant of real journalism.
Paying rich tribute to Prof. R.K. Chhibber, the Chief Justice observed that the values associated with his life assume even greater significance today. He noted that the institution of awards in his memory is deeply fitting, as it recognizes journalists who inform citizens, highlight public concerns, and strengthen democracy.
Congratulating the awardees, Justice Arun Palli stated that through their reporting they had served society and contributed to informed public discourse, and therefore richly deserved the honour being conferred upon them.
The Chief Justice also congratulated the Prof R K Chhibber Memorial Trust and the Press Club of Jammu for sustaining such a meaningful initiative, observing that the finest tribute to a great individual lies not merely in remembrance, but in carrying forward his values through institutions that inspire future generations.
He expressed hope that the awards would continue to encourage fearless, fair, and credible journalism and reinforce the value of truth in public life.
