UDHAMPUR, Apr 22: A Village Defence Guard (VDG) died today in an `accidental firing’ from his own weapon, in Upper Jakhed area of Dudu Sub Division in Udhampur district.
A police official said that an information was received at Police Station, Latti regarding death of a VDG, in Jakhed area. The police party rushed to the spot. The deceased VDG was identified as Rajeev Singh (39), son of Prem Dass, resident of Upper Jakhed. The family told that Rajeev was killed in an accidental fire. The rifle was also lying near him.
The police took the body into custody for the medico-legal formalities and a case was registered in this connection, the official said.
The VDGs are provided with weapons by the police after giving them basic training in handling weapons. These guards protect their families and villagers against the terrorists in remote and inaccessible areas of the region. Police have launched inquest proceedings in this regard.
