SRINAGAR, Sept 5: Holistic development of agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir is the top most priority.
Lieutenant Governor, Union Territory of J&K and Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu Manoj Sinha made these remarks during interaction with Prof JP Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu at Raj Bhavan here.
Considering shrinking land and water constraints diversification of limited farm land is important perspective for its development offering more entrepreneurship opportunities in agriculture and allied sector, LG Sinha stated.
Sinha advised for developing strong linkages of Farm University with public and private partners engaged in the development of agriculture. He emphasized to adopt best agricultural practices of the country for its site specific replication in the region, strengthening the knowledge and capacity of the resource poor farmers along with establishment of functional linkages of Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s with farmers especially in new areas of agriculture.
Lt Governor suggested for organizing farmers fair of duration of 10 to 15 days in the University during which participation of farmers from all the districts will be facilitated.
In such fairs recognition of the progressive farmers should also be done to motivate other farmers of the area, he added.
During the discussion, Professor JP Sharma appraised the Lieutenant Governor about the new initiatives of the University viz., Integrated farming system model approach, establishment of Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO), participatory seed production programme for enhancement in seed replacement rate, commodity based entrepreneurship development, start-ups in agriculture, establishment of processing units to reduce post-harvest losses and wastages, promotion of protected cultivation for quality planting material production in each KrishiVigyan Kendra for the holistic development of this sector.
Prof Sharma also discussed the status of establishment of three upcoming KVKs at Udhampur, Ramban and Kishtwar of the Jammu region.
Lieutenant Governor assured full support to strengthen the teaching, research and extension system of SKUAST Jammu for overall development of the farming community in the region.
