KATRA, Aug 1: Cardiologists at SMVD Narayana successfully performed a unique coronary artery aneurysm procedure. Coronary artery aneurysm is considered a rare finding in coronary angiography.
The patient was a 68-year old man, who was admitted to the hospital with severe heart failure and was critically sick with multiple conditions, including a history of multiple heart attacks. In this condition, coronary artery – the vessel supplying blood to the heart itself, swells and becomes larger than it is supposed to be.
Repeated heart attacks had damaged blood vessels of the patient, which had led to the development of a giant atherosclerotic aneurysm – swelling with deposition of fatty materials within the blood vessel with a critical blocked.
Since the patient’s condition was critical, Dr Maqbool and his team decided on an immediate intervention to save the patient’s life. “The case was a challenge as the aneurysm was present at the base of the main blood vessel. The surgery was done using a novel and latest ‘covered stent’, a tubular metallic mesh covered with a synthetic membrane. Consequently, recovery in the patient was quick and painless. He went home walking after a stay of just 24 hours in the hospital”, said Dr Maqbool, consultant cardiologist at SMVD Narayana Superspeciality hospital.
Covered stents provide a direct barrier to the in-growth of neointimal hyperplasia, sealing off the exposed inflammatory surface, and thus have the potential to inhibit narrowing of blood vessels. The advantage of covered rather than bare-metal stents is that the layer of graft material provides a direct barrier to tissue in-growth.
