DAMASCUS, Nov 1: More than 1,500 bodies of civilians have been found in a mass grave in Syria’ Raqqa province, the former de facto capital of the Islamic State (IS).
According to medical sources, the bodies belong to civilians who had been killed by the strikes of the US-led coalition on Raqqa, Xinhua reported on Wednesday, citing al-Watan Newspaper.
The bodies of 4,000 civilians have so far appeared in mass graves in Raqqa, adding that more bodies are being unearthed on daily basis.
The US-led coalition had supported the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in their push to capture Raqqa, which was the de facto capital of the IS in 2017.
The report said that the coalition’s airstrikes in Raqqa had destroyed 85 percent of the namesake provincial capital of Raqqa.
The Islmaic State, which proclaimed a “caliphate” over swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014, has now lost almost all the land it once controlled. It has been held responsible for multiple atrocities during its reign of terror, including mass executions and decapitations.
