Dogri literature is steadily growing in size and stature but there is lack of books for the children. In the Dogri language, novels, short stories, collection of poems, essays and travelogues have been regularly coming out, especially after the inclusion of the Dogri in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution during 2003. This regional language is making steady progress and attempts are now being made to meet the pressing demand for books for children.
A bold attempt has been made by P L Parihar, an educationist, to pen down small poems in this book for the very young children. Rightly, he has chosen to write simple, straight poetry in their mother-tongue. Such efforts should be carried on vigorously to publish special books for the children which certainly will create interest for reading and at the same time popularizing the Dogri language. “Catch them young” is going to attract new generation to building firm foundation of their mother-tongue and also stir their creative frontiers.
The Sahitya Akademi too has constituted award for the authors writing books for the children especially in their mother-tongue, in very simple language, on the topics which fascinate the children and such books gain popularity if they are profusely illustrated with colorful pictures and photographs. Gradually now some Dogri writers are coming forward to bring out books specially catering to the interest of the children.
Mr Parihar, as an educationist fullyl understands the child psychology as well as their needs, has ventured to publish the book under review titled “Pehalian Kasootadian” which is meant for the very young age children.
The book has 101 small poems couched in a very simple Dogri language which can be easily understood by the children. The poet has made discrete selection of the subject matter of each of his poetry compositions.
Among others there are poems like Ganga-Ram, Chhann-Mama, Anar, Jyot, Succha gyan, Rukh bute, Gaddi, Mor, Titli, Tarre, Koyal, Kanni, Tota-Maina, Mat-Pita, Badl, Chidya Rani, Rail, Gauv Mata, Holi, Beisakhi, Kulfi, Kabutar, Motorcycle, Guddi-Gudda, Fogi, Pathshala, Tarnga, Saacha Jivan, Dada-dadi, Nana-Nani, Desh gan, Succha Rishta, Lori, Dogra, Sidak, Desh Prem, Nanne Bacche, seekh, etc are some which are of absorbing interest for the impressionable age children.
One of the “Poet’s Choice” stanza from one of the poem titled Holi is quoted as follows:
Holi Aye Ae, Holi Aye Ae
Sab Ne Moj Manae Ae
( Holi has come, everyone is celebrating this festival of colours. Let us all enjoy it to our best)
This book has been nicely printed with an attractive title page depicting toddlers. The writer of this book, Mr. Parihar is having an educational institution in Jammu city and is well acquainted with the overall psychology and interest of the children. He has already authored two books Kungli-Kula (collection of poems) and Saadi Dati – Sheela Devi and his two more books are being shortly published.
