Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, Apr 4: Uncertainty looms large over normal functioning of Jammu as a section of agitating students have refused to suspend the ongoing strike even as JU Negotiation Committee agreed to concede their demands following which the protesting students announced to call off the agitation from today.
Sensing possible trouble due to difference of opinion among the agitating students, Jammu University is learnt to have requested SSP Jammu to provide security on the campus to avoid any untoward incident on re-opening of the university tomorrow.

Pertinent to mention that JU authorities had yesterday ordered suspension of  class as well as non-teaching work for April 4 after agitating students paralyzed functioning of the university on Tuesday by blocking entry of all the employees into the campus yesterday morning.
The protesting students, who were demanding additional facilities like wi-fi, round the clock food in hostel and revocation of suspension of five colleagues besides removal of Prof Satnam Kour as Dean Students Welfare, began their chain hunger strike this morning and staged a dharna in front of the Vice-Chancellor’s secretariat.
According to a JU spokesperson, the Negotiating Team constituted by the University had discussions with the representatives of the striking students. The members of the Committee and the student representatives unanimously agreed that in the interest of the entire University community, the ongoing agitation should be brought to an end as soon as possible, the spokesperson added.
The members of the Committee and the students’ representatives also agreed that the demand raised by the students with respect to University infrastructure and facilities were legitimate and the same should be provided in the shortest possible time.
The University also revoked the suspension of five students who had been suspended after the incident in the office of DSW on March 23, 2018.
Even as the agitating students announced to call off their agitation for resumption of routine class work from tomorrow, Abhinandan Sharma, who is one of the students whose suspension has been revoked, refused to suspend the strike. He also did not participate in the discussion with the Negotiating Committee and reiterated the demand for removal of Prof Satnam Kour as Dean Students Welfare.
