JAMMU, Feb 18: Jammu Unit of Student Association of Ladakh celebrated its 26th Annual Day here today.
Former minister and senior congress leader, Raman Bhalla was the chief guest on the occasion while President Ajaz Mir, Rehana Batool, Sabah Sharif, Tahira Bano, Assistant Professors and students were also present.
Earlier, a colourful programme was displayed by fresh talent and emphasised the need for communal harmony for future progress in their cultural activities. Meritorious students of Ladakh, who have qualified different competitive exams were also honoured.
Bhalla said that such celebrations immensely help in preserving the rich cultural heritage of a particular region besides giving exposure to the talent of the students.
He highlighted the importance of unity and cultural harmony and advised the students to work hard for achieving their goals in life. For tapping potential for adventure sports and mountaineering which involves hiking and climbing on hilly terrain, former Minister said Kargil should be pitched as the base camp for expeditions to the Nun Kun Peak.
During the function, Bhalla appealed the Government to address demands of students such as introduction of Bhoti language at Senior Secondary as well at University level courses and also seeking Ladakh to be declared under Schedule VI of the Indian Constitution.
President of the association, Ajaz Mir in his address said that the Jammu region has four universities besides an IIT and Indian Institute of Mass Communication; the Kashmir Valley has three universities and a National Institute of Technology. This makes it a total of seven universities for the erstwhile state, including two Central Universities. As usual, it’s Ladakh which is left behind. He demanded each Medical, Engineering or other Vocational institutions for the region.
