JAMMU, Feb 18: Local Prali craft of Jammu was awarded at 34th Surajkund International Craft Mela, organized by the Government of Haryana and inaugurated by President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.
Satyadev Narayan Arya, the Governor of Haryana and Bandaru Dattatreya, the Governor of Himachal Pardesh presented the prestigious `Kala Nidhi’ award to Mukti Society -a Jammu based NGO, for its outstanding contribution in highlighting Parli Craft of Jammu.
Nidhi Sharma, founder and chairperson of Mukti Society, received the trophy and cash award from the Haryana Governor on the concluding day of the program.
Mukti Society, which is working on rural women empowerment, had displayed local Prali craft of Kishtwar area in the Surajkund Mela and all the artefacts in the event were made by women artisans. According to Nidhi Sharma, Tourism Department of Haryana expressed its eagerness to encourage the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh handicrafts, which are diminishing due to several reasons.
Three hundred artisans and artists form at least 30 countries and all the States of India participated in the Mela that witnessed more than 13 lakh local and foreigner visitors. The event was jointly organized by Tourism Department of Haryana in collaboration with Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Uzbekistan, was the partner country in organizing the International event.
