Speaker urges people to participate in upcoming Panchayat elections

BILLAWAR, Oct 31: Speaker, Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Dr Nirmal Singh, has appealed the people to participate in huge numbers in the forthcoming Panchayat elections of the State.
Addressing a series of public meetings in the Billawar, he said elections are soul of the democracy and peoples’ participation only enriches it. He said election is also like festival of democracy and like other festivals it should also be celebrated wholeheartedly.
Dr Singh attended public meetings at Dadwara, Billawar and Koti, which were well attended by the people. He said Indian democracy is a shining example of the writ of the people and it has been consistently strengthened with successive elections.
The Speaker said massive development works have been initiated in the Billawar constituency in the last four-year years. He said developmental works of about Rs 500 crores have been sanctioned in this constituency. “While some of them are near completion, some are being executed, which include widening of Sukarala-Billawar road, double lanning of Billawar-Phinter road, road construction under PMGSY worth Rs 109 crores and construction of Indoor stadium”, he added.
On the occasion, Dr Speaker also remembered Iron man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 142nd birth anniversary. He said Sardar Patel’s momentous service and monumental contribution to India can never be forgotten. “India can’t forget legacy of Sardar Patel in uniting the country geographically by merging erstwhile princely states”, he asserted.
