Prabhat warns strict action against drug cartels

SRINAGAR, May 14: Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat today said that in the first 30 days of Jammu and Kashmir’s 100-day “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan,” police arrested 866 people in 724 NDPS cases, seized 667 kilograms of narcotics and more than 90,000 psychotropic units, and attached 97 properties worth Rs. 41.85 crore.

Addressing a press conference at the Police Control Room here, the DGP said the campaign has significantly intensified anti-narcotics operations across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly targeting drug trafficking networks and what he described as narco-terrorism and Pakistan-backed drug syndicates. He warned cross-border drug cartels of strict legal action.

He said the “Nasha Mukt Abhiyan” has accelerated enforcement efforts and reflected “consistent performance” by the Jammu and Kashmir Police since 2023 in areas including property attachment, preventive detention, and seizure of contraband.
The DGP said attachment of properties linked to narcotics trafficking has increased steadily from 2023 to 2026, adding that the Jammu and Kashmir Police ranked third nationally in 2025 in this category.
He further said 240 preventive detention orders under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in NDPS (PIT-NDPS) Act were executed in 2025, placing J&K Police first in the country. “There has been nearly a seven-fold increase in NDPS cases compared to last year,” he said under the ongoing campaign.
During the 30-day drive, he said, 866 persons were arrested in 724 NDPS cases registered across Jammu and Kashmir.
Among those arrested were Gulzar Ahmad alias “Lau Gujar,” wanted in 28 cases, and Avneet Singh alias “Nagi,” wanted in 17 cases in Jammu.
The police seized 667 kilograms of narcotics and over 90,000 psychotropic units during the campaign. “Preventive action was also taken against 24 habitual drug offenders”.
He said 97 properties linked to narcotics trafficking, valued at Rs.41.85 crore, were attached so far. “In a first of its kind, Police has attached properties beyond the territorial limits of J&K, including one each in Gurdaspur, Pathankot and Chandigarh,” he said.
He added that Kulgam Police attached properties worth Rs. 93 lakh in Beli Charana area of Jammu to establish backward linkages in drug networks.
The DGP said 41 properties worth nearly Rs. 15 crore were demolished after following due legal procedure, while illegal poppy and cannabis cultivation spread over 117 kanals of land was destroyed. “Illicit poppy and cannabis cultivation spread over 117 kanals of land has been destroyed during the drive,” he said.
On pharmaceutical monitoring, he said 5,238 chemists and drug shops were inspected and action was taken against 151 establishments. “At least 5,238 chemists and drug shops were checked while action was initiated against 151 erring establishments,” he added.
He added that 4,962 kilograms of narcotics and 6,493 psychotropic units were disposed of during the campaign.
The DGP said driving licences of 162 individuals were cancelled or suspended, while 92 vehicle registration certificates linked to drug trafficking were also revoked or suspended. He also said recommendations were made for impounding 10 passports connected to narcotics cases.
