SRINAGAR, Jan 8: Hundreds of Shiites today staged protests in several areas here against the execution of their top cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by the Government of Saudi Arabia last week.
Holding banners of Nimr and flags of Iran, hundreds of Shia protesters took to streets at Narbal along Srinagar-Baramulla National Highway after Friday prayers and staged protests against the Saudi regime. The protesters raised slogans against the Saudi rulers and condemned the execution.
Similar protests were also held at Zadibal and Hasanabad areas of Old City after Friday prayers. The protesters were holding banners inscribed with pro-Nimr and anti-Saudi slogans. The protesters alleged that the Saudi regime is acting on the directions of United States and Israel.
The protesters however remained peaceful unlike early this week which prompted authorities to clamp restriction in Shia-dominated neighbourhoods of the city. There was no report of violence or any other untoward incident, a police official said here.
