He said that the district administration and police teams visited the schools today and took over management of these schools.
These include 28 schools in district Baramulla, 5 in Kulgam, 2 in Banidpora, one in Shopian, two in Budgam, three in Srinagar, five in Kupwara, four in Anantnag and seven in Pulwama.
One of the schools -Khairul Basher Uricharsoo Model School – in Pulwama district was already closed in November last year because of dearth of students as only 21 students were enrolled in it. The school records were however taken over by the Principal Govt Higer Secondary School Pinglena Pulwama on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Pulwama and Chief Education Officer Pulwama.
The Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars of the respective areas have been made Administrative Officers of these schools. The schools were taken over by the Principals of adjacent Government Higher Secondary Schools, Headmasters of Government High Schools and Headmasters of Government Middle Schools.
The Government, in August last year, had taken over management of 215 schools affiliated with the banned JeI across Kashmir and the 57 schools were now completely taken over by the Government today.
The Government had then said the managing committee of such schools would be taken over by the concerned District Magistrate or Deputy Commissioner, who shall constitute a fresh managing committee in due course for respective schools after getting them duly verified.
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, on February 28, 2019, and again on February 27, 2024, declared the JeI a proscribed organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Intelligence agencies had identified a number of schools which were directly or indirectly affiliated with the Jel or its Falah-e-Aam Trust.
The Government had said the validity of the managing committees of these schools had expired, and also their panels have been “reported adversely” by the intelligence agencies.
It had said the decision to take over management of such institutions was taken in order to safeguard the academic future of the students enrolled in these schools.
