JAMMU, Oct 5: The two -day national seminar on “Exploring Cultural History of Jammu and Ladakh”, organized by Centre For History and Culture of Jammu and Ladakh Region, University of Jammu, in collaboration with Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), concluded here today with a valedictory function.
Rehana Batool, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu, was chief guest in the valedictory function whereas Maj Gen (Retd.) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal, presided over the event.
In her address, Batool hoped that the seminar will go a long way to forge better intercultural relations between the two regions. Maintaining that there was lots of influence of foreign culture on Ladakh, she said that it needed to be preserved and more such events should be organized for the awareness of students and intellectual community and society as a whole.
Maj Gen (Retd.) Goverdhan Singh Jamwal , in his presidential remarks, said that people of Jammu had contributed a lot in military history of India. “There is a lot of work need to be in tracing heritage of Ladakhis and Dogras, ” he added.
The function started with the welcome address by Prof. Anita Billawaria while chairperson of the Seminar. Prof Jasbir Singh , presented a comprehensive report of two-day proceedings. Prof Sudhir Singh proposed vote of thanks. Dr Hina S Goel conducted the proceedings.
Earlier, the day started with a plenary session in which Dr Balmukund Pandey, Secretary Akhil Bhartiya Itihaas Yojna, was the plenary speaker. He emphasized the importance of having an indigenous Indian perspective on Indian history because the Britishers had permeated Indian history and distorted the Indian concept of Itihaas to history. ” J&K is a rich reservoir of historical facts which are scattered across the State. There is a need to organise it,’ he added.
Later five parallel technical sessions were organized in which 60 scholars from across disciplines from various parts of the country presented research papers.
