Security beefed up, R-Day venue sealed in Jammu

JAMMU : Security has been beefed up ahead of Republic Day in this winter capital of State and the Maulana Azad Stadium-venue for celebrations-has also been sealed by the forces. With almost a week left for the Republic Day celebrations, security grid has been increased in the city with additional deployment of troops and raised checkpoints at all the sensitive locations.
“We do not want to leave any loophole in context with the security, so the personnel have been directed to maintain vigil and tighten security within the city especially around the venue of Republic Day celebrations,” a senior police official said here today.
The State police in assistance with other agencies have tightened the security within the city and the peripheries. However, in view of threats of infiltrations from across the Line of Control and International Border, the Army and Border Security Force, has also sounded alert along the borders and beefed up the security. Special check points have been raised at various locations and no vehicle particularly the commercials, are being allowed to move without frisking.
“Men in Khakhi and civvies are maintaining surveillance,” he added and said surprise raids are also being conducted in hotels and lodges to trace out any suspicious movement. The police official added that pickets have been raised along the banks of River Tawi, which is located adjacent to the Maulana Azad Stadium.
The State police have also issued advisories to the people asserting to register details of their tenants with their concerned police stations, he said.
“The main venue which was closed for sports activities has been sealed while the Indoor Sports Complex located close to the venue will also be closed for the activities from tomorrow as security forces have taken over,” an official said.
He said besides raising barricades, barbwires have also been put in place around the venue and nobody is being allowed to move randomly close to the venue except the officials, who are also being allowed to enter only after authentic identification proof. (AGENCIES)
