When abhinaya is perfect , the technique flawless and the costume gorgeous, it is the lithe silhouette that completes the stunning visual of a Dancer…… Fitness is important in all professions, but not as much as it is in dance rhythm perfected movements, holding of posture and sculpture esque poise all require a supple, fit body. Dance demands harmony and sychronocity and both are achieved only through mind and body discipline. Dance contributes hugely to fitness in two ways. First, the movements of all dance forms are very complex specially classical. Second, dance builds mental fitness and alertness- after all, a dancer has to process the lyrics and the rhythm while executing controlled movements and expressions.Yoga, the ultimate mind-body fitness tool is inherit in dance. Dance is also called as Natya Yoga, as its practice involves the eight elements- yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, prathyahera, dhyana and Samadhi.
Any nritta (pure dance) builds aerobic capacity in way running does. The movements in most dance forms involve bending and twisting the body parts and simulate push ups, stretches and side bends. A fast paced segment builds as much stamina as it calls for, the mudras and postures of classical dance forms help build muscle flexibility and body balance.
Signature movements of classical Dance Forms
Bharatnatyam: Include adavus( basic combination makes a jathi) movements or expressions of abhinaya. Karanas are transitional movements which are 108 involves a static pose as base.
Odissi: the basic square stance or the chauka, minadandi(which literally translates to covering space like fish) tribhangi or the three break pose and the movements arising from them like baitha and ghera and pirouetles.
