SRINAGAR, Aug 11: A pack of free roaming wild animals has created fear in two villages of Kulgam district with residents staying indoors and students preferring homes over schools fearing attacks on them.
Residents of Brinal and Lamad villages in Kulgam districts have barely left their homes from the last three days as wild bears and leopards are on prowl and roam freely during the day and night in the area.
The residents said they cannot leave their homes. Fearing attacks from these free roaming beasts parents have stopped their children from going to schools.
A teacher in a Government Middle School corroborated with what parents said. He said children attendance has dropped by 20 per cent in the last three days.
He said that most of the Government Schools in the two villages are without fencing and the animals can attack anytime.
Last week, a 16-year-old boy, studying in Class 10, was attacked by a bear near his home. He has suffered grievous injuries, and he has suffered damage to his eye, said his relative Gulzar Ahmad.
Besides human lives, the residents said the wild animals have also caused damage to apple, pear and cattle.
The panicked residents demand that wild life department should immediately come into action and prevent attacks on them by the beasts.
