Sarpanch arrested for kidnapping bid

KATHUA, July 26: A Sarpanch of village Chinji-Makwal in Ramkote area of tehsil Billawar, was today arrested by Hiranagar police on the charge of trying to kidnap a young girl, working in the State Health Department as Female Multi-Purpose Health Worker (FMPHW).
The daring Sarpanch, Ajit Singh alias Jeeta, son of Munshi Ram, resident of Makwal, tried to drag the young girl in his black Alto car bearing registration No. JK08C/8489 at Dayala Chak in full public view at around 10.45 am. The girl resisted and raised alarm at the Bus Stand near railway bridge. The people sensing trouble rushed towards the car and tried to pull out the Sarpanch. The girl was rescued by people but the Sarpanch rushed towards Ramkote- Billawar road in his car. Some people also tried to chase him.
The public and the girl sounded PCR Kathua and Hiranagar Police Station. They flashed message to Dinga Amb and other police parties. Dinga Amb police party led by ASI Jagdish Singh, intercepted the vehicle at Bus Stand ( Quatran) but Sarpanch tried to dupe the cops and sped away towards Dinga Amb bazaar, creating panic among locals and then leaving behind vehicle in the busy market, rushed towards a house of one Mela Ram. The cops chasing Sarpanch along with local youth, nabbed him and gave him some thrashing. The SHO Hiranagar R K Sharma also reached there along with some force. The Sarpanch was arrested and his car seized.
SDPO Border, Mohan Lal Kaith told the Excelsior that a case FIR No. 101/13, under Sections 366/354 RPC has been registered against Sarpanch Ajit Singh of Makwal. His car has also been seized. The statement of the girl was recorded. She is Government employ and was posted in Health Department in Ramkote area. The locals have lauded the prompt action of the police.
