Rail services remain suspended as tracks damaged at several places

SRINAGAR : Though rail runs remained suspended for security reasons for the fifth day today, the last day of strike called by separatists, it will take few more days to restore the service as tracks have suffered damage at several places.
All train runs remained suspended between Srinagar-Badgm-Baramulla in north Kashmir and Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu regions for security reasons for the fifth day today.
As there was apprehension of trouble during the strike, rail services have been suspended, a railway official said adding the service will be resumed only when there is peace.
He said it will take two more days to resume train service as tracks have been damaged at several places in south and north Kashmir. Some quarters and other property has also been damaged during the demonstration. It will take few days to repair the damaged portion of track, they said.
He said in the past protestors attack and damaged railway property, including trains causing massive loss. There was also risk to passengers so the trains remained suspended he added.
Strike called by separatists will end today provided it is not extended. Earlier, the separatists had called for a general strike on Saturday in protest against the killing of top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) in an encounter with security forces in south Kashmir district of Anantnag Friday evening.
Burhan Wani, most wanted commander of HM, carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakhs and two other militants were killed by security forces in Kokernag area in south Kashmir, evoking massive spontaneous protests in the valley.
Later they extended the strike for two more days in protest against the killing of civilians killing in security force firing.
It was later extended till today, when people are remembering the martyrs of 1931 as on this day 22 Kashmiris were killed when Dogra police opened fire outside the Central Jail, Srinagar. Government, mainstream and separatist political parties are paying tributes to martyrs. (AGENCIES)
