Prez gives Padma awards to 52 including Prof Yash Pal, Sharmila Tagore, Rahul Dravid

NEW DELHI, Apr 5:
Eminent scientist Professor Yashpal,  cricketer Rahul Dravid, filmmaker D Ramanaidu, former Censor  Board chairperson Sharmila Tagore, actress Sridevi, Cartoonist  Bapu, fitness expert Vandana Luthra and poet Surender Sharma are  among the 52 personalities who were conferred the Padma Awards by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
While two persons- Internationally renowned sculptor Raghunath Mohapatra and Professor Yashpal – were given the Padma Vibhushan, 10 persons including Rahul Dravid, former civil servant Hemendra Panwar, filmmaker D Ramanaidu, scientists Vijay kumar Saraswat and Ashoke Sen, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and industrialists R Tyagrajan were conferred the Padma Bhushan at the function.
The event was attended by Vice President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur and many Ministers of the union Cabinet including Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Minister of State for Home R P N Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Home Secretary R K Singh.
A total of 40 persons were given the Padma Sree including educationist Anvita Abbi, Radiologist Sudarshan Kumar Aggarwal, Litteraterurs Mohammad Sharfe Alam and Salik Lakhnawi, industrialists Heemndra Prasad Barooah, SKM Maeilanandhan and Rajshree Pathy and Bollywood actor Sridevi.
The list further includes artists Swami C C D Bharti, B Jayashree, S Lakshminarayana (Bapu), Brahmdeo ram Pandit, R Nageswara Rao, Surender Sharma, Suresh Talwalkar and doctors Deepak Bhaskar Phatak, Mudundi Ramakrishna Raju, C Venkata Ram, Filmmaker R Madhavan Nair and sportpersons Ngangom Dingko Singh, Bajrang Lal Thakar.
Three of the awardees – social worker Ram Krishan, Urdu Poet  Sakil Lakhnawi and educationist Manju Bharat Ram – were given  the awards posthumously. (UNI)
