Dr Gian Singh, a renowned Dogri writer has authored a book containing prayers based on Markanday Puran for the readership in Dogri language. There was much demand for such a simple poetic composition.
Jammu region, endowed with natural charm, salubrious climate is dotted withnumerous sacred places of religious importance . The people have deep faith in the Shakti worship and there are many places devoted to various goddesses and other deities. A felt need was for prayers in Dogri which this book by Dr Gian Singh has met.
Spiritual Flavour
The author, in his foreword in this Dogri poetry book, has described how he was motivated to undertake this venture of composing in Dogri the prayers to Durga Mata. He disclosed that he was inspired and encouraged by one Surinder Raina of Janipur colony, Jammu, who stood silently behind him in finalization of this noble task of “Prayer to Maa Durga” published in Dogri.
Another person Subhash Jandial also resident of this locality supported the project and also wrote a foreword praising the Dogri poetic composition of Maa Dugra by Dr. Gian Singh, an eminent Dogri writer with his long innings as editor of Dogri Sheeraza put out by the J&K State Cultural Academy. Dr. Gian Singh also got promotion and later retired but continues with his literary pursuits.
Interesting Material
This small booklet is a well printed and produced publication. Costing only Rs 45 it is sold at a fast pace. Now the Dogri speaking people find it convenient to sing the songs of Maa Shakti Durga in their own language instead of reciting Sanskrit Shalokas or any other medium. The Dogri poetry has the musical tone and simple- stylish language. It is a good publication for which Dr. Gian Singh deserves a word of praise.
