SRINAGAR, Nov 10: Several retailers in Kashmir are endangering people’s lives by selling substandard and misbranded Mustard oil, which has been shown to be contaminated and unsafe for human consumption by sample reports.
Officials said they are on the lookout for the key perpetrators behind the counterfeit substandard Mustard oil trade that was being sold under the brand name P-Mark in various locations throughout the Valley, including district Ganderabl, Wanpov in South Kashmir, and Budgam district.
According to authorities, the police recovered about 415 cans of counterfeit mustard oil sold under the brand name P-Mark in the wanpov region of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. “The misbranded oil cans were discovered twenty days ago, but no action has yet been taken,” an official said.
He said the oil was on its way back to Jammu’s AARTI-Enterprises, which also owns another mustard brand when it was stopped by police. “The police have seized oil cans and a vehicle with the registration number JK13 E 9933,” an official said.
The police quickly contacted Food Safety inspectors, who conducted a quality check and took samples. The findings indicated that the mustard oil was poor, including dangerous levels of contaminants. “An official indicated the iodine value was around 1030.18 and the saponification value was around 193.25.”
The Commissioner of the Food Safety Department Kashmir, Shakeel-Ul-Rehman admitted that misbranded and substandard mustard oil is being sold in various locations in the Valley, and they were already aware of it.
“We have sent out notices to the dealers and are on the lookout for the real culprits. Following information regarding the problem, raids were conducted out in Ganderbal and Wanpov where misbranded mustard oil was recovered,” he said.
He said that this is a brand copy and that all information will be handled legally. “We have strictly obeyed the law, and no one will be spared,” he said.
