Srinagar, Sept 21: Police today used water cannons to disperse the protesting traders and transporters of General Bus Stand Batmaloo after they tried to march toward Civil Secretariat.
They were protesting against the shifting of General Bus Stand of Srinagar from Batmaloo to Parimpora on city outskirts.
The protesters started a protest march from Batmaloo towards the Civil Secretariat, but they were halted after travelling about 300 meters and police fired water cannons at them to foil the march.
Marchers chanted and waved banners against the shifting of the Bus Stand and demanded the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti, to look into the matter. Ever since the Government ordered to shift the General Bus stand of Srinagar from Batmaloo to Parimpora, the traders and transporters have been demanding the revocation of the order.
Earlier, the protesters had gathered for a sit-in at the General Bus Stand Batmaloo, however, as soon as they started their march towards the main Batmaloo road, police swung into action and foiled the protest.
The Batmaloo area surrounding the bus stand observed a shutdown as shops and business establishments pulled down their shutters in protest.
