Police bust illegal poppy cultivation, book 6 cases

SRINAGAR, Apr 21: Kulgam Police intensified its crackdown against narcotics and illegal activities, booking multiple offenders in six FIRs while destroying illicit poppy cultivation at several locations, recovering 2.615 kg of poppy straw-like substance, and seizing 21 bottles of illicit liquor in coordinated operations across the district.
At Qazigund, two FIRs were registered under the NDPS Act after police detected illicit poppy cultivation in Babapora and Bonigam. The standing crops were sampled, seized, and destroyed on the spot in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. In Bonigam, the land was found to be under the possession of a local resident.
In a separate operation at Dooru Crossing, police apprehended a suspect during naka checking and recovered 2.615 kg of poppy straw-like substance from his possession. A case under the NDPS Act was registered and investigation initiated.
Further, action in Zadoora and Lalipora led to the detection and destruction of additional illegal poppy cultivation, with landowners identified during the enquiry.
Meanwhile, in Devsar, two more cases were registered after police discovered separate patches of illicit poppy cultivation in Kilam. The crops were destroyed following legal procedures.
Additionally, at Qaimoh, police seized 21 bottles of illicit liquor from a person during naka checking on Harnag Railway Road. A case under the Excise Act was registered.
