JAMMU, Feb 2: On the eve of Prime Minister’s visit to the State, PoK Displaced Persons (DPs) held a protest demonstration here today by stapling themselves with steel chains for highlighting their plights and step motherly treatment by the Government.
A large number of DPs, stapled in chains, took part in the protest demonstration, which was organized by the SOS International- an organization of PoK Displaced Persons, led by its chairman Rajiv Chuni.
Carrying banners and placards, the protesting DPs had stapled chains around them symbolizing that even after 70 years of Independence; the community was still kept as slaves by not addressing their genuine grievances and demands. They appealed Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set them free from these chains of slavery by addressing their issues and demands.
They raised slogans in support of their demands, which include implementation of the whole package passed by State Cabinet in October 2014 for PoK DPS, facilities to all DPs at par with Valley Migrants, reservation of eight Assembly seats for the people displaced from PoK, permission for PoK DPs to visit their religious places in Pak occupied Jammu Kashmir, inclusion of 5,300 PoK DP families living outside the State in the ambit of package passed in October 2014 and return of cash deposits with interest to PoK DPs lying with J&K Bank Mirpur.
While leading the protest demonstration, SOS International chairman Rajiv Chuni said that even after 70 years of Independence, the DPs were still being kept as slaves by the ruling class, which has no consideration for human rights of this community. He also appealed Prime Minister Narender Modi to realize the plights of Displaced Persons and recognize their grievances as well as the demands on humanitarian grounds.
“In 2015, PM Modi had promised Rs 2000 crore package as first installment to the Displaced families and even after four years since his announcement, less than one fourth of the amount has been so far disbursed among the PoK DPs, which means it would take around 20 years for disbursement of the said amount and 100 years in giving complete package to the community,” he said and appealed PM to practically implement his slogan ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ instead of making it a Jumla.
