JAMMU, Sept 9: The need base and casual workers of the Power Development Department (PDD) today held strong protest demonstration and dharna in the office premises of Chief Engineer at Canal Road, Jammu and demanded release of their wages pending for the last many months.
A large number of PDD casual workers under the banner of J&K Need Base / Casual Labours Union, Power Development Department (PDD) Jammu Province, led by Akhil Sharma- Union president, assembled in the office complex of Chief Engineer PDD (M&RE) Jammu in the morning and started protest demonstration. It was followed by day- long dharna.
The protesting PDD workers were also carrying banners and placards depicting their demands. They were shouting loud slogans against the senior PDD officers and also in support of their demands. They were demanding release of pending wages of 3405 Power workers, regular monthly pay under Wage Head (outsourcing) and implementation of SRO 381.
They alleged that despite several representations to the Chief Engineer and other senior officers in PDD, their demands were not addressed. Even employees staged dharnas and held protests several times, no body bothered. Their families were facing starvation due to non-payment of their wages since long. The hapless workers were being forced by the senior officers to take harsh steps and launch indefinite strike, they cautioned.
Akhil Sharma and several other trade unionists addressed the gathering and sought the intervention of Governor and concerned Advisor into the matter. They demanded that their hard earned wages be released without any more delay.
